Fabric and Threads Offers State Fairgoers Hands-On Crafts
The Iowa State Fair invites Fairgoers to get involved with the Fabric and Threads department. With a variety of crafts and sewing projects to participate in, Fairgoers are bound to find a hands-on activity they enjoy. "Nothing Compares" to the 2011 Iowa State Fair set August 11-21.
The State Fair Sew-In will be open each Fair day from noon until 5 p.

Iowa State Fair's Free Stages Set to Thrill Audiences
The 2011 Iowa State Fair free entertainment lineup is filled with rising stars and perennial favorites. The Fair's five free stages, all free with gate admission, will feature hot acts from a wide array of music genres. "Nothing Compares" to the Iowa State Fair, set August 11-21.
Country music fans will find many great shows to tap their toes to, including The Band Perry ("If I Die Young"), Jason Michael Carroll("Livin' Our Love Song"), Josh Kelley ("Georgia Clay") and The Oak Ridge Boys ("Bobbie Sue").
Help for Adults Transitioning to College Life
Kirkwood Admissions office hosts New Adult Learner Welcome Day, August 3; event designed to dispel myths about returning to college.
Kirkwood Community College will hold a reception for adults who are planning to return to college or start for the first time. The free event is set for Wednesday, August 3, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 125, Iowa Hall on Kirkwood’s main Cedar Rapids campus.
PEO Chapter MZ to meet
PEO Chapter MZ will meet at the Benton County Nature Center by Rodger's Park on July 25 at 1:00 PM.
Legion Fish Fry changed; members to serve brats, hamburgers at Fareway Aug. 13
The Vinton American Legion fish fry scheduled for August 12 has been canceled due to damage to the Legion Hall. Plan on attending the September 9 fish fry. We sustained damage to the roof and venting structures which will shut us down for events till repaired.
The American Legion will hold a brat and hamburger feed in the Fareway parking lot on August 13 from 10AM til 2PM.
2nd Annual Kids Triathlon
The Kids Triathlon will be held Saturday, July 30th. Check-in begins at 7:15 and ends at 7:45 am. The team and individual race will begin at 8 am. Kids will swim, run, and bike. There are three age divisions and distances.

Cardboard Boat Races July 30 at pool; sailors urged to bring their vessels
The Cardboard Boat Races will be held at the Vinton Swimming Pool, Saturday, July 30th from 7-8 pm. Bring your own boat constructed of only cardboard and duct tape to see if you have the fastest one in town. Please visit the Vinton Swimming Pool front desk or the Vinton Recreation Center for rules on racing and boat construction.
